Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is the kind of band that would be turning heads even without its gimmicky name or the NASCAR jumpsuits bandmembers wear onstage. Hailing from Detroit, the songwriting duo was one of the standout acts at SXSW this year, consistently impressing audiences with a richly textured sound full of tickling guitars, full-bodied vocal harmonies, unconventional percussion, and just the right amount of studio magic. Throughout the band's work, there’s a reverence for the art of the pop song. Some tracks reference Detroit's bygone Motown sound; others are sumptuous covers of the Beach Boys or Gil Scott-Heron. “Morning Thought” plays with a host of strange experimental textures but still ends up sounding pretty. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s debut album drops on June 7.
