Back in the '70s, when veteran soul singer Lee Fields first burst on the scene, his James Brown-inspired coiffed tresses and raw vocal power earned him the nickname "Little J.B." He maintained that look and singing style through his Southern soul circuit days in the early 1990s and his label resurgence in the late '90s and early '00s. But on the 2009 album My World, Fields settles more into himself. "Ladies" is still full of the visceral charisma that makes soul so alluring, but the rough edges are smoothed out with Fields' passionate croon. His backing band the Expressions round out the track with cool, Philly soul-style horns and strings.
