Brooklyn band Bear in Heaven, fresh off a big endorsement from Pitchfork, took the tiny stage at Williamsburg's Zebulon to play songs from their new album Beast Rest Forth Mouth--and we've got the whole show for you right here.
Before You Press Play
Hometown: Brooklyn (via Georgia and Alabama)
The Facts: Jon Philpot sorta started Bear in Heaven back in 1998. The band now includes Adam Wills, Sadek Bazaara and Joe Stickney. After an EP in 2003 and a debut LP in 2007, the Bear became a band to watch at CMJ '09 and backed it up Beast Rest Forth Mouth, which garnered a Best New Music tag from Pitchfork. (A little known fact: Philpot was half of the noteworthy avant-garde duo Presocratics back in the late '90s and early '00s.)
The Sound: Mind-bending, rhythmic rock that's more accessible than it is eccentric.
Latest Release: Beast Rest Forth Mouth, released on October 13 on Hometapes.
He Said, She Said: "This is music that's bigger than your iPod--music you'll want to feel all around you." -- Eric Harvey, Pitchfork
"They've kept their soaring choruses and This Heat noise smackery intact, but now the whole thing has the pulse of '80s new wave and '00s nu-rave, a mix of synthy hypnosis and teeth-baring heavy metal drumming. Second album Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as huge and cinematic as space-punk gets..." -- Christopher Weingarten, Village Voice
