The Japanese pianist Ayako Shirasaki was a jazz prodigy in her youth. In the fifth grade, she was transcribing the works of the renowned American jazz pianist Bud Powell, and by age 12, she had already begun her professional career, making regular appearances at the ā€œJā€ jazz club in her hometown of Tokyo.

Now Shirasaki calls Brooklyn home, having arrived in New York on scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music.
