Erika Wennerstrom got more than her band’s name, Heartless Bastards (which comes from the name of a trivia video game) from the bars around her hometown in Dayton, Ohio. Her local music heroes in the early '90’s — indie-rockers The Breeders and Guided By Voices — inspired Wennerstrom to form her own band, and at the Heartless Bastards' first gig in Akron, the group landed a record deal. By chance, the Black Keys' drummer, Patrick Carney, also saw them play, and that led to the release of Heartless Bastards' debut album Stairs and Elevators in 2005 on Fat Possum Records.
Now, Wennerstrom calls Austin, Texas home — she moved there from Ohio “for a change of inspirational scenery.” This track, “The Mountain," is the title track to the band’s latest 2009 release. The sound is thick with drums and twangy strings. At the center is the swagger of Wennerstrom’s vocals.
