John Ellis
“Lonnie”
Playing Tuesday at The Jazz Standard
 (116 E. 27th St., Gramercy)
Get: Tickets | Directions

The smooth sounds of Brooklyn-based saxophonist John Ellis come to New York by way of North Carolina, where he grew up, and New Orleans, where he honed his talent. Ellis isn't afraid to mix some R&B or funk into his tunes and frequently plays and records with his band, Double Wide.

In this song, "Lonnie," Ellis shows off his saxy stylings around the kind of hook that you'll find yourself humming later on. Like all jazz musicians worth their weight in brass, Ellis won't be alone onstage on Tuesday night. Mike Moreno will be on guitar, Aaron Goldberg will be on the keys, Joe Sanders on bass and Kendrick Scott will be at the drums.
