Nothing stretches the definition of pop like a band who writes unassailably catchy hooks and then buries them alive. Such is the case of the New Zealand garage quartet Surf City, which boasts songs so awash in reverb and lo-fi fog that their cheeky titles ("Records of a Flagpole Skater," "D**kshaker's Union") seem incidental, their lyrics a near-total mystery. Luckily, the melodies those lyrics support are more than strong enough to stand on their own. "Autumn" wouldn't be the same without singer Davin Stoddard's vocals, but they are merely the whitecaps on a roiling ocean of sound.
