Also known as the other national sensation from Wasilla, Alaska, Portugal. The Man is showing America what a smart and accessible indie band can do with a little bit of talent and hard work.

Since 2006, the group has been releasing a cool album each year, steadily building on its sound, which is a kind of far Northern take on psychedelic pop that's equal parts guitars, strings, synthesizers and falsetto vocals. Portugal. The Man is now based out of Portland, Oregon but the group continues to draw on the surreal undertones and majestic soulscapes of the Alaska frontier in its lyrics and artwork.

This summer, Portugal. The Man released its first album on a major label, titled In the Mountain in the Cloud. It’s full of genuine bangers like “So American,” proving that a band doesn’t have to sell out to break the glass indie ceiling.
