What do Beck, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Joe Strummer, and Tom Waits have in common (besides being some of the most influential and recognized musicians of the past century)?

The incredibly prolific and versatile Smokey Hormel has been an accompanying guitarist on nearly 100 albums and scores of the past couple decades including: Johnny Cash's American 4 and 5, Tom Wait's Mule Variations, Neil Diamond's 12 Songs, Nora Jone's The Fall, Beck's Mutations, Joe Strummer's Streetcore, Justin Timberlake's Future Sex / Love Sounds, Cibo Matto's Stereotype A... the list goes on and on.

Smokey is currently involved with 2 parallel projects that couldn't seem to be any more different, but are just a testament to his range of musicianship: Smokey's Secret Family which pays tribute to to Congoloese Rumba (African dance music from the 1950s and '60s) and Smokey's Round-Up which is a return to his early love Western Swing. The well-traveled guitarist and composer plays selections from Smokey's Secret Family in our studio and discusses the Soukous music of Grand Kalle. Eat your heart out Vampire Weekend.
