M.A.K.U. Soundsystem
"Canto Negro"
Playing Saturday at S.O.Bs
(204 Varick St., SoHo)
Get: Tickets ($10) | Directions

Queens- and Brooklyn-based Colombian fusion band M.A.K.U. Soundsystem weaves traditional Afro-Colombian rhythms like cumbia, mapalé and bullerengue with a myriad of U.S. musical genres including punk, jazz and rock.

The octet was formed by guitarist Camilo Rodriguez in 2009 as an outlet for the folkloric rock blends he and his fellow Colombian expatriates in New York City create.

Download the group's slow-burning, psychedelic cumbia, “Canto Negro,” above and watch an interview WNYC did with M.A.K.U. bandmembers about Colombian rock in Queens below.

MAKU Soundsystem performs at S.O.B.s on Saturday night.
