When he was growing up in Canada, Michael Bates had his feet in two very different musical camps. He was exposed to jazz greats Sun Ra and Dave Holland, but he first began playing music with punk bands. Now a full-fledged jazz bassist, Bates still cites punk outfits such as Bad Brains as one of his inspiration along with Miles Davis. You can hear his varied influences in this complex composition, which Bates recorded with his quartet Outside Sources. In a sense, Bates takes the power of punk and the moodiness of jazz and melds them into one, sonically cinematic force.
