Colombian roots meets city living in the energetic, rock-inflected jazz of Sebastián Cruz and the Cheap Landscape Trio. The electric guitarist and composer formed the New York-based group in 2008 to explore his identity as a Colombian New Yorker and the friction produced when his native country's musical traditions “[rub] against elements of urban New York City life (multi-cultural mesh, recycling, discarding, minor epiphanies, and major cacophonies).”

Download the group's carnivalesque “Paradis Quarter” above and check out Sebastián Cruz and the Cheap Landscape Trio -- featuring bassist Stomu Takeishi and guest drummer Satoshi Takeishi -- perform at Cornelia Street Café on Wednesday night.

In the video below, watch Cruz’s take on the three-line Japanese poetic form “Haiku,” pairing brief, beautiful compositions with quietly-captivating snippets of everyday New York urbanity.
