Brooklyn-based Canadian electropop duo New Look is like a pair of early-'80s R&B archeologists — only instead of dusty pick-axing they prefer to rely on their synths and talent to unearth and revive some of the best melodies and rhythms of yore in their music.

Although New Look calls its crisp tunes “future-pop,” singer keyboardist Sarah Ruba’s soulful melismatic singing style and producer keyboardist Adam Pavao’s funky beats and synth lines convey deep understanding and appreciation of past pop.

Ruba and Pavao -- who are also married -- formed the band in 2005 and dropped the EP How's My Hair in 2008. New Look's full-length self-titled album debuted in Europe last September.

New Look performs at the Cake Shop on Monday night.
