Approaching his third decade in music, roots-noir singer-songwriter and producer Joe Henry continues eluding and evolving past facile genre-categorization.
The L.A.-based artist began penning alt-country in the mid-'80s. Today he creates vivid, intimate narratives that are melodically prismatic and kaleidoscopic in their influences, which include blues, jazz, folk, soul, and rock.
As a producer, Henry keeps his collaborators as diverse as his compositions. He's worked with such eclectic and iconic talents as Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello, Allan Toussaint, Madonna and Ani DiFranco.
Joe Henry performs at City Winery on Wednesday night. Download the bluesy “Odetta” from his 12th album, Reverie, which was released last fall, or watch the video below for “Unspeakable” from the same album.
