Spoek Mathambo is the nom de tune of Soweto artist and musician Nthato Mokgata. The South African DJ-rapper-producer uses an array of electronic, hip-hop and rock music from all over to fashion and inform his musical expressions of South African culture and identity.

Mokgata explains his personal philosophy and approach in a recent TEDxSoweto talk (see a video of the talk below): “It’s all about taking as much information from everywhere to create your own personal future and for you to say who you are in South Africa right now. Not for you to be defined, for people to say ‘You’re the blackest white guy, you’re the whitest black guy…’ but for you to do your thing the way you can do it. I mean, the judgments are really tired.”

Spoek Mathambo will perform at SOBs on Thursday night. Check him out live and download his vintage soul-styled tune “Let Them Talk” from his new album Father Creeper
