Mingus Big Band
"Tonight At Noon"
Playing at: Jazz Standard
(116 E. 27th St., Gramercy)
Get: Tickets (2 shows) | Directions

It's been 30 years since jazz lost the great bassist and composer Charles Mingus, but his legacy refuses to die, due in part to the formidable Mingus Big Band. Along with touring the world and playing regular gigs at the Jazz Standard, the Mingus Big Band has also released critically-acclaimed albums, such as the Grammy-nominated Tonight At Noon: Three or Four Shades of Love. On this track from that album, the Mingus Big Band (featuring the Mingus Orchestra) plows through this driving, hyper-cool tune, marked by creative, impressive solos from drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts and Alex Sipiagin on trumpet.
