Musician, actress and artist Alicia Hall Moran and her husband Jason, who is an acclaimed jazz pianist, composer and the artistic director of the Kennedy Center start a residency at the Whitney Biennial on Wednesday.

The five-day interdisciplinary series, called BLEED, aims to explore, “the power of performance to cross barriers and challenge assumptions,” through events and musical collaborations between the pair and a slew of visual artists, writers, dancers and musicians. They include Glenn Ligon, Joan Jonas, LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs, Greg Tate, Adenike Sharpley, Esperanza Spalding and Bill Frisell.

Before the residency gets underway, download “Break Down,” the opening song on Jason Moran’s 2005 album, Artist In Residence. And in the video below, watch a WNYC interview with Moran from 2009 in which he discusses his approach to playing Thelonious Monk -- whom he regards as “his first inspiration” -- and performs the piano legend’s song “Crepuscule with Nellie.”
