Trombonist and composer John Yao dove into the New York City jazz world in 2005 after relocating to New York from Chicago. He got a Masters in jazz performance at the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music while performing as a sideman in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and in the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. In 2010, he also co-founded his own 17-piece ensemble, the Yaozeki Big Band.

In April, Yao and his quintet -- featuring rising talents Leon Boykins (bass), Will Clark (drums), Jon Irabagon (saxophone) and Randy Ingram (keyboards) -- released their debut album, In The Now. The LP’s percussive centerpiece and titular track, "In The Now," is available for download.

John Yao and his trio perform songs from the new album along with other compositions for the trio at the Brooklyn Lyceum on Wednesday night. If you can’t make the show, the next John Yao Quintet gig will be held at the New York Public Library Pelham Park branch on June 16 at 2 p.m.
