A Tribe Called Red is an indigenous DJ-producer collective from Ottawa, Canada. Since forming in late 2010, DJs Bear Witness, NDN (Ian Campeau) and Shub (Dan General) have been concocting a signature blend of music they call "powwowstep," which is a mix of traditional pow wow vocals and drumming, dubstep and other electronic music.
A Tribe Called Red also produces the visual art for its music videos -- which is drawn from Native American depictions and imagery in pop culture -- and hosts a monthly party and showcase of Native talent and culture in Ottawa called "Electric Pow Wow."
Before the show, download “General Generations” from the group’s free self-titled album. The song features vocals sung by Cayuga chief Alexander J. General (Deskáheh) that were recorded some 80 years ago. And this video for “Woodcarver” is the group's memorial to John T. Williams, a seventh-generation Native totem woodcarver killed by a Seattle policeman in 2010.
