(6 Delancey St., L.E.S.)
Get: Tickets ($20) | Directions

Indie-pop quintet Freelance Whales has a familiar Internet-age origin story: the band’s members met on Craigslist in 2008. The crew then honed its twinkling five-part melodies by busking on the New York City streets and subways with an array of instruments, including a harmonium, a xylophone and a waterphone.

The five-piece made its recording debut in 2010 with the album Weathervanes and is at work on a follow-up record it hopes to release this year.

Freelance Whales hits the Bowery Ballroom stage on Friday night. Ahead of the gig, download the group's tune "Generator (First Floor)" and watch the video for “Generator (Second Floor)."

As I did not see a waterphone I am assuming that these were sampled sounds?

There's something very intriguing about to complexity of the melody(ies) of Freelance Whales. And what a great story of this band's origin. Just goes to show there's always room for something fresh. You just sold another album.
