Portland Cello Project Portland Cello Project (J. Quigley)

Portland Cello Project
"H*A*M"
Playing on Monday at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
(126 Crosby St., Soho)
Get: Tickets ($15) | Directions

The music of Britney Spears, Outkast and Lil Wayne usually doesn’t figure into the repertoire of cello orchestras. By contrast, the Portland Cello Project plucks through Kanye West’s and Jay Z’s Watch The Throne with an inspired zeal that other ensembles might reserve for Haydn’s and Dvorák’s works. In doing so, they demonstrate that pop and hip hop can be rich, uncharted (and fun) terrain for orchestral music.

Download the group's rendition of “H*A*M” by Jay-Z and Kanye West from its new album of hip-hop songs, Homage. Also check out the music video for the song “Denmark” by composer Gideon Freudmann.

Portland Cello Project performs at Housing Works on Monday night and at the City Winery on Tuesday night.
