Mali’s Amadou & Mariam play a melodic blend of desert-rock and Afropop. The married pair of blind musicians first met and fell in love in school in the late ‘70s and have been playing together since the early ‘80s. Western audiences first became acquainted with the duo’s music in 2005 when Spanish-French alt-rocker Manu Chao produced (and played on) their LP, Dimanche à Bamako (Sunday in Bamako).
From Amadou & Mariam’s latest album, Folila (or, “music” in Bambara), comes the downloadable song called “Dougou Badia,” featuring electro-pop singer Santigold. Watch the music video “Oh Amadou (feat. Bertrand Cantat)” below.
Amadou & Mariam perform at Central Park Summerstage on Saturday.
