In a video recorded last year with singer Gretchen Parlato, guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke described himself as being “from everywhere.” And it’s not far from the truth. Loueke was born in Benin, later lived in Paris, then moved to Los Angeles and finally, came here to New York. His latest album Heritage reflects upon the musical influence that all of his many homes over the years have had on his music.
Lionel Loueke joins us in the studio to talk about his percussive guitar style, why he chooses not to sing in English, and working his latest album with pianist Robert Glasper. Plus, he along with his trio, bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Mark Guiliana, play live. Listen to their full session in the Soundcheck studio.
