Today on Soundcheck, a preview of new music releases with Joe Levy -- from a new Carly Rae Jepsen single to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music record Cruel Summer. Poet and rock legend Patti Smith discusses her latest album Banga, a record that takes its name from a Russian novel. And California surf rock band Best Coast drops by the studio to play songs from its excellent summer album The Only Place.

New Releases From Carly Rae To G.O.O.D. Music

It may have been a quiet summer for new releases, but it's gearing up to be a big fall. Joining us to discuss some noteworthy releases this week is Billboard editor and Soundcheck regular Joe Levy. We hear the latest from Carly Rae Jepsen, Pink, Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label and a reissue of Michael Jackson's Bad, which features a previously unheard demo from the late King of Pop.

Patti Smith Returns With 'Banga'

This summer, poet, author and songwriter Patti Smith released her first album of new material since 2004, Banga. The record takes its name from Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov's book The Master And Margarita, and it's a collection of 12 songs that brim with literary, religious, historical and musical references.
