Patti Smith For Musician In Chief

KCRW's Anne Litt Nominates The Iconoclast Singer And Poet

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

KCRW DJ Anne Litt proposes Patti Smith for Musician In Chief...with running mate Neil Young. Both "candidates" here, in 1976. (Kate Smith / Courtesy of the artist)

Over the next few weeks, Soundcheck is looking for our first Musician In Chief, in which special guests nominate musicians and make a case for why that artist should become commander in chief. Yesterday, Billboard's Joe Levy nominated Keith Richards. Today, we turn to KCRW DJ Anne Litt for her pick, Patti Smith.

The Musician In Chief Candidate: Patti Smith

Submitted by: Anne Litt

Reason For Nomination:

It's time for a woman and mother to run this country. Not that she'd do it, but a girl like me can dream, right? How amazing would it be to have a president who is a well-read, intelligent artist who also understands people? Someone who knows what children need, who has raised them on her own Who has taken care of friends who are sick and in need of help? Who understands the difference between religion and faith in something bigger -- art? Who speaks the truth and in reality?

Patti Smith will be the first commander in chief who can double as poet laureate.

Patti Smith is possibly the fiercest woman I've ever had the honor to meet. She would put the best band, er, cabinet together full of old friends and her family.

Campaign Slogan: "People Have The Power."

Probable Running Mate:

Neil Young. Since in the interest of gender equality we should have a falsetto voiced VP to contrast with our deep voiced POTUS.

Core Campaign Issues:

- Art in schools.

- Education and literature for all.

- Healthcare -- especially for those in need.

- Funding for CPB -- everyone loves public radio!

- Environment -- every child should be able to play in the woods and lie in the grass.

- Let's stop war -- Patti could eloquently make that happen

-- Economy --  Rock and Roll is free. It's about global communication. What could be better than that?

During first 100 days in office, what will your candidate achieve?

Because of the woman Patti Smith is, she will want to accomplish everything right away. She is patient though and will write and draw and help us to all slow down and recognize beauty.

Who will serve in cabinet?

Bob Dylan; Laurie Anderson for Aerospace (not even sure what that cabinet position is); Meg White; Bruce Springsteen. Plus: Lou Reed, Tom Morello and Paul Westerberg too.

Will he/she perform at inauguration?

She will have performance art at her inauguration.  She will perform with her friends and family band. It will be a real family affair.

Guests:

Patti Smith
