In the opening lines of A Woman Like Me, the new memoir from Bettye Lavette, the veteran R&B singer's fate is in some unsavory hands. The book begins: "A vicious pimp was precariously holding on to my right foot as he dangled me from the top of a 20-story apartment building." Still a teenager, Lavette already had two top-20 R&B singles behind her -- and years of hard times ahead. But these days, Lavette is feeling, as the title of her latest album explains, "Thankful N' Thoughtful." She joins us for a look back at fifty years in life and music.
