Some musical ideas come to life with just a few players. Others require a really big band. That’s where the Awakening Orchestra comes in. Led by horn player and multi-instrumentalist Kyle Saulnier, the 20-person avant-garde ensemble performs jazz originals that are both lush and inventive.
As such, Saint Peter's Church should be an ideal venue to see the band perform. The high ceilings and grand acoustics fit the bands aims, evident on "The Words, They Fail to Come." Long and meandering, the piece shifts easily between composition and improvisation, making full use of the band's cast. Even when it initially sounds like only the basic instruments are involved, backing players provide a subtle sense of atmosphere that becomes clearer as the song unfolds.
