Ahh, the New York City Subway: it’s loud, it’s dirty, and if you're a New Yorker chances are you've spent a lot of time there. But things aren’t all bad underground - the band Taarka got their start there. Husband-wife duo David Tiller and Enion Pelta-Tiller used to busk on the platforms, and 12 years later they’re still going strong.

The couple met in Brooklyn in 2001, and their subsequent performances on public transportation helped to merge their two distinct musical backgrounds into a single sound. As a band, Taarka is pure folk, but with surprising elements sprinkled in just often enough to keep you on your toes. With a randomly rotating cast of supporting musicians, the trick is predicting what those surprising elements will be next.

Download the track "Wandering" by Taarka above, and watch a video of them performing live below. Taarka plays Barbès Tuesday night.
