SHOW: Wednesday at Bowery Ballroom ($15)

North Carolina band Ahleuchatistas takes the first part of its name from a Charlie Parker song. That doesn’t mean they sound like the jazz great. They really don't. What the band does do is a fitting homage to Parker - wild improvisation, sounding perfectly out-of-place with the world.

The duo's brand of avant-garde rock also brings to mind composers like Steve Reich and the so-called minimalist movement. Confused yet? You should be. Like their name, Ahleuchatistas may be a little difficult to understand at first, but with time the duo's complications make glorious sense.

Download "Lighted Stairs" by Ahleuchatistas above, and watch a video of them performing the song "Vanished" below. Ahleuchatistas opens for Buke and Gase at the Bowery Ballroom Wednesday night.
