It’s been a while since we’ve heard from R&B pop singer Alice Smith. Her 2007 debut got her a deal with Epic Records, but the major label refused to release a follow-up after years of work. Now free from her contract, Smith is finally able to release her new set of soul-inspired pop songs.

Judging from "Cabaret," the first song released from Smith's forthcoming album She, it's hard to understand Epic's decision. Smith's voice is in full-on power mode here, belting out the song (and especially the chorus) with enough gusto to convert the skeptical. It helps that the old school-style backing track expertly matches Smith's verve.
