SHOW: Wednesday at Mercury Lounge ($15)

Japanese Girl Groups is a genre with a specific sound.  Bands like the 5, 6, 7, 8s and Shonen Knife blazed the trail, but the New York City band The Suzan shows that the style has taken hold here too.  They combine the kitsch and energy of the Japanese Girl Group sound with a style all their own.

Much of that style seems to come from a quest for pop perfection. Whereas some form of pop-punk has been the name of the game for other Japanese Girl Groups, The Suzan takes a decidedly funkier approach, sounding like they aim to be crafty as they are energetic. The band accomplished this on today's download at least in part thanks to collaborating with Bjorn Yttling (of Peter, Bjorn and John fame).

Download the track "Ha Ha Ha" by The Suzan above, and watch a video of the band performing the song "Come Come" in a stripped-down session below. The Suzan plays Mercury Lounge Wednesday night.
