Rocky Votolato's newest album, True Devotion, came out of a particularly dark time in the singer-songwriter's life. After the release of his 2007 record, the Seattle indie scene vet fell into a consuming depression and descended into self-imposed isolation, during which time he stopped touring and writing songs. After immersing himself in books on philosophy and spirituality, Votolato battled through his depression and began writing again, eventually recording the reflective and mostly acoustic Devotion. On "Red River," a track seemingly inspired by his early years in Texas and Washington, Votolato sings about escapism with deep yearning.
