"Falling Day"
Playing FRIDAY at: Bowery Ballroom
(6 Delancey St., L.E.S.)
Get: Tickets | Directions

Since she first emerged from the New York City subways to release her debut album seven years ago, guitarist Kaki King has continuously reshaped her sound. King has gone from a D.I.Y. solo instrumental busker to a formidable front woman, leading a full band on both guitar and vocals. For her fifth album, the newly-released Junior, King teams up with drummer Jordan Perlson and multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan. Trios can often sound spare and intimate, but on this track, King and her cohorts sound larger than their number. "Falling Day" is punkish, surreal and expansive, opening with an antsy guitar line and King's haunting vocals before tumbling into a whirlpool of crashing drums, electronics and guitar.
