Susana Baca
"El Bosque Armado (La Canoa)"
Playing SUNDAY at: Le Poisson Rouge
(158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village)
Get: Tickets | Directions

For a Peruvian folk singer, Susana Baca has built up some considerable American cred. She broke through in 1995 with a spot on a compilation released by David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, and in 2002, she took home the Grammy for Best Folk Album. Baca's latest effort, Seis Poemas, is a tribute to the late Peruvian vocal legend Chabuca Granda, who was Baca's friend and mentor until her death in 1983. Lead track "El Bosque Armado" was in turn written by Granda in tribute to one of her own heroes, the poet Javier Heraud.
