Kenny Garrett
"Intro to Africa"
Playing at: Iridium
(1650 Broadway, Midtown West)
Get: Tickets (2 shows) | Directions

Ever since saxophonist Kenny Garrett toured with Miles Davis in the late 1980s and early '90s, Garrett has been forever linked to the legendary jazzman, even though he has spent considerable time as a sideman with other artists and proven himself a leader many times over. Still, it seems for some, Garrett hasn't been able to fully escape the long cast of Davis' shadow. That being said, it would seem that Garrett's latest release, Sketches of MD: Live at the Iridium, with its Davis-inspired title, would be a straight-ahead tribute to the jazz figure. While the title track certainly takes its inspiration from Davis, the rest of the recording is actually inspired by other jazz greats. On this laid-back track in which Garret is joined by fellow saxist Pharoah Sanders, Garrett tips his hat to John Coltrane and Duke Ellington with a bluesy, gospel-tinged meditation.
