The all-female Brooklyn outfit Effi Briest borrow their name from a famous German novel and their sound from the punky experimental groups that ruled the downtown scene in the late '70s and early '80s. Beginning as a 12-member collective in 2006, the band has since slimmed down to a much more manageable sextet. They still pack quite the sonic punch, however. This track, from the group's newly released album Rhizomes, is a trippy art pop stomp grounded by subtle funky bass and lead singer Kelsey Barrett's tribal punk vocals.
