Edmar Castaneda
"Colibri"
Playing at: Jazz Standard
(116 E. 27th St., Gramercy)
Get: Tickets (2 shows) | Directions

Edmar Castaneda is a composer and virtuosic harpist. His technically accomplished finger picking on the 34-stringed arpa llanera, a traditional harp found in in his native Colombia, combines folk music from his homeland with more contemporary Latin jazz, flamenco and other music forms. Listen for his hyper-dexterous pizzicato plucks and percussive slap-bass techniques on the track “Colibri” from his ground-breaking release Entre Curedas and you’ll start to understand how it is that Castaneda can sound like a one-man jazz trio.
