Miguel Zenón
"Esta Plena"
Playing ALL WEEKEND at: Jazz Standard
(116 E. 27th St., Gramercy)
Get: Tickets (Multiple shows) | Directions

Saxophonist Miguel Zenón is a native of Puerto Rico, and on this title track from his Grammy-nominated 2009 album Esta Plena, Zenón marries contemporary jazz with the folkloric Puerto Rican music style known as plena. Opening with a chorus of a cappella singers and hand percussion, the tune gracefully segues into a complex jam led by Zenón and the first-rate pianist Luis Perdomo as the band establishes a rootsy take of Latin jazz. This weekend, Zenón and his septet continue to explore the music of Esta Plena for their run at the Jazz Standard.
