It wasn't easy to get a hold of jazz records behind the Iron Curtain in Amina Figarova's home country of Azerbaijan, but as a child the pianist was lucky enough to be exposed to Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson while also getting schooled in the music of Bach and Rachmaninov. Now, as a performer, composer and bandleader, Figarova plays with a cool grace that discloses her early musical influences. On this original tune from her forthcoming album Sketches, Figarova displays her elegant mastery of the keys while her band backs her with equal finesse.
