On his new record, An Albatross and a Half, Brent Arnold loops and layers his vocal and acoustic cello with an arsenal of electronics to create a sprawling array of sounds that goes from minimalistic to orchestral heights in each song. Here is the obligatory and noteworthy nod to Andrew Bird; but equipped with his cello, Arnold can wield a deeper intensity of sound and dig up some gravel. This cello virtuoso has studied with Walter Gray of the Kronos Quartet and jazz violinist Michael White in Seattle, as well as Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, DJ/Rupture, Eyvind Kang, Brand New, Karl Blau, and Lenny Kravitz.
