Jennifer Egan: Exploring Music and Time

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Jennifer Egan is an award winning journalist and writer whose latest novel, A Visit From The Goon Squad, is full of music and musicians. It’s not rock fiction, per se, but its pages hum with song. She joins us to talk about weaving music into a narrative -- and what she’s learned about the history of pauses in rock songs.

The pause...

In my years as rock musician or even as a Jazz Voice major with a minor in composition, I have never heard a musician call it a "pause."

Mostly I've heard this referred to as a "stop time" by rock and jazz folk. Classicists call them "rests."

Just thought I'd share.
