The first record that Tokyo-born composer, pianist and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto ever bought was Tell Me by the Rolling Stones. Sakamoto subsequently fell under the spell of French Impressionism. “Debussy was my hero,” Sakamoto says, “Asian music heavily influenced Debussy, and Debussy heavily influenced me. So, the music goes around the world and comes full circle.” Echoes of his teenage music idol, along with world music influences, can still be heard on the track “Firewater,” from his 2-disc Out of Noise album out last month. The bonus track below, “Thousand Knives,” is on the companion disc, Playing the Piano. "Firewater" highlights Sakamoto’s experimentation with electronic ambient elements, while "Thousand Knives" is stripped of all electronic influence.
