To most, the phrase “Midwestern rappers” probably sounds like the title of a Saturday Night Live skit. But Freddie Gibbs is trying to change that. Raised on the mean streets of Gary, Indiana (the Chicago suburb and longtime American murder capital that produced Michael Jackson), Gibbs has been bringing the “third-coast” sound to the world with a recent series of mixtapes, including the fantastically named Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, and a fresh EP called Str8 Killa No Filla. Old-school rap purists will be pleased by Gibbs’ approach, which eschews hook-driven odes and big spending for lyrically dexterous commentary on the gangster life.
