Chico Mann
“Ya Yo Sé”
Playing at: Santos Party House
(96 Lafayette St., Chinatown)
Info: Tickets ($10) | Directions

Marcos Garcia is a man with a concept. Using the alias Chico Mann, the former Antibalas guitarist poses a musical thought experiment: what if Afrobeat legend (and now, Broadway’s) Fela Kuti visited New York in the early 1980s and made music with Lisa Lisa, Stevie B and the other young Latinos innovating the electronic dance music formerly known as Freestyle. With his new release on the Wax Poetics label, Analog Drift, Chico Mann splits the difference between those seemingly disparate genres. This track, “Ya Yo Se,” pairs the tight signature guitars of Afrobeat with the flying synths and drum machines of Freestyle. Tonight, he takes the stage at Que Bajo, the weekly electro-Latino party burning up Santos Party House these days.
