This Sunday is the Super Bowl. At my last place of employment, we would have been talking about the big game for weeks by now. No, no, I didn't work for the NFL. I didn't even work for some sort of sports media organization. I worked for a publicly traded empire led by a domestic maven whose name rhymes with Schmartha Schtewart -- and especially the week before the Super Bowl, we were both literally and figuratively up to our elbows in chicken wings, chili, taco dip, guacamole, deviled eggs and probably some sort of football-themed cake, just for good measure.
All of this to say: I have a sneaking suspicion that most people out there are more excited -- like, way more excited -- about the impending eating this weekend than the football, the commercials, the parties -- any of it. And I'm guessing that a lot of you, like me, will be spending some time in the kitchen this week getting ready for the nosh-fest that neatly coincides with the point of the year when everyone decides to give up their New Year's Resolutions.
So what we want to know is: what do you like to listen to when you're in the kitchen? Do you pop in a favorite CD? Tune in to a favorite internet radio station? Flip on the old FM dial?
Maybe you're even a particular brand of freak like me, who matches specific types of music to specific types of meal-making. Brunch at our place means that, without a doubt, bluegrass is on -- there's just something about beating eggs in time along to a foot stomping banjo jam.
Most dinner prep calls for SiriusXM U -- satellite radio's faux-college indie rock station -- mainly because it's something my husband and I can agree on. But, if pasta's on the menu, we're probably dancing around the kitchen to Sinatra or Dean Martin. Party snacks, a.k.a. comfort food, are best aligned with comfort music -- which, for me, is the sugary pop of the late '90s or '00s. Guilty pleasures, be damned.
